My 2510 is still working just fine after two years and several new toner cartridges. The problem others are reporting I think is with the newer cartridge, not the printer itself.

I recently had to return two toner cartridges because the paper would jam after the first page printed...similar to the complaints I read on Amazon.com

After returning the second (new) OEM cartridges, I figured I would try a refilled (remanufactured?) cartridge -- and it works fine! The print quality is just as good as my first bonafide Samsung cartridge.

My theory is Samsung screwed up the quality control on the cartridge, or outsourced them, because the fuse (the shiny green roller) is blue on the newer ones that don't work. My refilled cartridge had the original green-colored roller.

Samsung needs to look into this problem, because I wasted a lot of time with returns...but the printer is still great. Loud, but nice clean B&W prints.

Which Audience?

There are a wide variety of areas of print quality to take into account. For most general office use for internal communication, we might consider absolutely perfect print quality to be unnecessary, but for customer-facing documentation and presentations, this should never be the case. For colour proofing tasks, of course, colour accuracy issues become critical.

The ability to assess professional print quality is something which can be learned from experience, but for most people, the buying of a new printer is not a regular event. Discussing with friends and colleagues is an obvious way to go, but even then it is hard to get a full picture of the choices now available.

Here we list in brief, some factors to consider in terms of print style and expectations, for regular office document productions. Closer inspection of documents which look adequate in principle, reveal distinct differences in print quality in specific areas. These are the areas to focus on when looking at those all-important test sheets.

Black-Only Printing: Office Documents

Text clarity on all print media is the issue first and last with Black-Only printing. Individual printer products differ widely in their control of so called ink splatter . This occurs with the spreading of miniscule droplets of ink, which vary in size between different printer models, from the defined text edges. Such ragged edges are caused primarily, either by alignment issues with the print head, by use of inappropriate print settings for the media used or the media itself.

However, even under expert control, some printers will always offer much-reduced ink splatter than others. In particular, the differences in quality can be most obvious between machines with a fixed print head as part of the machine compared with machines (far more common) with the print head as part of the disposable cartridge. Here users are faced with a choice of cost issues. Colour Printing: Office Documents

As well as variations in ink droplet size, the use of colour inks under-laying the black is a contributing factor to the sharpness of text and lines in colour printers, but a downside can be the presence of colour dots outside of the defined edges, which are a feature of poor cartridge alignment. Good performers here are the Canon MP-450 and the Lexmark P4350.

Colour lines and colour depth are factors which deserve close scrutiny. Look for deep, rich colours. Look also for blocks where banding occurs, where positioning of the print head differs slightly as is passes in each direction.

Colour purity and accuracy need to be carefully considered, if the print output is to engage a buying audience, or when technical requirements (eg in graphic design projects) mean that accurate colour is paramount. Inkjet printers have problems here more than laser printers mainly because of the interface between liquid ink and paper. Much more attention is needed as to the type of media used, for example when coated media might be preferable to plain media,

I got a refurbished model of this Lexmark and I'm perfectly happy with it. It prints extremely well in I've never had any trouble with the feeder. It even has a CD that sets the defaults up fast and is extremely easy to use. It even has an cartridge alignment and cleaner function to program. The only problem with this item is user error. Do not use the 'best' quality ink setting on this; the ink spreads to thickly and will cause you to use up a color cartridge after 10 a4 papers; it also won't dry effectively. But this little snafu is easily avoided by keeping the ink output at levels 1 or 2, not the supposedly better '3' setting. Either people are getting spoiled and expect archival quality photos with a printer or they have a lemon. Just make sure you snap in the Lexmark cartridges correctly, don't abuse the the little thing and it will be fine. Note: it is very light weight and can rattle its way off a table just via printing so just make sure you have it placed securely on a flat surface. Maybe put a small paperweight on it. I got this printer in August 2006 to bring to college with me. I print out articles and papers almost every day, and I have not had to change the toner since I bought it. The toner-replace light has been flashing since the end of my sophomore year (May 2008), but the printer is still printing just fine. Such a better value over ink, which you have to replace MUCH more often.

The printing speed is fast and the quality is great. I have had very few problems, just a few jams which were easy to clear up. I highly recommend this printer.

It's too slow, uses a lot of ink, etc. etc. However I looked specifically for a printer that would reliably feed labels, business cards, and other cobbled up stuff. Lexmark was the only company I could find that would claim to handle this stuff, and the printer does. It is downright scary as it violently grabs the media for printing. But, it prints accurately and does not jam, or skew, the media. It also prints quite rapidly in black and white. Faster than my old Canons. It IS slow on color printing, but I did not buy it for that. And It seems to be not as bad on ink as I had anticipated. I isn't any more of an ink hog than my HP. So far, it is just exactly what I need.

This printer has a great price, good specs, and fast printing. However, it does have some issues that hopefully HP will work-out.

The firmware seems pretty buggy. We've had several different problems with the printer crashing. Every couple days or so we get a "Service Error" message on the screen and the printer has to be rebooted. Also, I tried printing a large (1000 page) pdf on it and it would just freeze after printing around 140 pages. It froze twice on the exact same number of pages. I had to break it up into print jobs of 100 pages each. We've also seen where it gets in an infinite cycle where it says, "Processing Job" and the data light blinks, but nothing ever comes out. Again, it requires a reboot. We upgraded the firmware, but the problems didn't go away.

FYI, a parallel port doesn't seem to deliver data fast enough to this printer! It consumes data faster than the port can send it. We could only achieve the 45ppm when we hooked it up to the USB 2.0 port. Not sure about the performance when using HP JetDirect internal print server.

Been in moderately heavy use for over 2.5 years, prints fast on both sides from the paper tray with no problems. Networking works just fine, wireless (if you have the wireless version) or wired. I never installed anything except the printer driver. Just tell Windows (on whatever computers I want to print from) to "Add a new printer" then "Create a new port" "Standard TCP/IP Port" then use the printer's netbios name or IP address, which is easily configurable in the 1320n's web-browser-based utility.

Main complaint is manual feed. It doesn't work very well. The way it's supposed to work is you open a little door and put an envelope or sheet of paper in a slot. One sheet at a time. No fold-out tray, nothing thing to hold the sheet but a little friction after you push it far enough into the slot. This works OK with envelopes, but with paper the friction is not enough and sometimes the page just falls out of the slot onto the floor.

So apparently the manual feed slot is designed mainly for envelopes. But again, you could really only do one at a time. There's another door you can open on the back of the printer to allow envelopes to go straight through so they don't get bent. And again, there's no tray to hold them; they just fall out the other side. (Make SURE you use the manual feed slot and open that back door if you're printing labels, or they'll get stuck inside the printer.)

In summary, this is a great printer for printing on both sides of plain paper. The problematic manual feed won't be an issue for you unless you're wanting to print stacks of labels, envelopes, or postcards, etc. (The main reason I ever use manual feed is to print on both sides with non-duplex printers, which doesn't apply to this printer.) And if you want to print on letterhead or another color of paper, you can just put it in the main tray.

Lexmark E450DN Monochrome Laser Printer Review

I love this printer! I had a big Lexmark Optra S1855, but it was literally too big for my office, so I got rid of it. Replaced it with the Brother 5250dn. I was pretty satisfied with that, but there were a few annoyances, like how the Brother would always pull a sheet back in to duplex even if there were no second page (duh). Anyway, this E450dn has a terrific small footprint and seems VERY sturdily made (more so than the Brother, IMO). In addition, this has the nicest LCD screen/menu system I've ever used on a Printer (the brother didn't even have an LCD). The network is support is fantastic. It supports everything from Appletalk to IPv6 (though not Netware, in case you have a really old Netware network, for some reason). Vista support is good (though it was a little harder to install than XP).

There are only a few small down sides of this printer: 1) The toner is a little more expensive than the Brother (even on ebay) and 2) The Lexmark, like every other Lexmark I've used, makes a small noise every once in a while as it keeps the toner warmed up. You get to ignore it pretty quickly, though. 3) The memory upgrade (if you really need more than 64mb for some reason) is expensive non-standard RAM. On the whole, though, I LOVE this printer!

EDIT: One thing to watch out for: I think the printer is a little sensitive to card stock -- even relatively thin card stock. Just to be sure, I suggest at LEAST turning off duplexing for card stock and preferably using the manual sheet feed.

I've had this printer for over a year now. 1500 pages later the introductory cartridge is still going strong (you have to make sure you print in "econo mode"). It's fast, quiet enough, and reliable. I've only had problems with the drivers (on XP) a couple times but turning the printer on/off or reinstalling the drivers easily makes that go away. I've only had a total of 2 jams on this printer but they were completely my fault and were easy to remove.

Definitely DO NOT pay 0 for this. I believe I got mine off Amazon for around or so. But this is a good personal printer and I'm satisfied with my purchase....much cheaper in the long run than an inkjet. If you plan on printing more than say 20 pages per day, you might want to look at a beefier model.

EDIT: 7/1/09

Well, as an addendum to this review 9 months later, I recently had to change the print cartridge. I replaced it with a generic since I don't really care if it explodes or not when it costs half the price (the cartridge was a little off on first use but now prints the exact same as name brand). I have experienced the driver corruption problems that other people talk about, but it didn't take me more than 20 minutes to fix- just rotations of turning the printer on and off, rebooting windows, and reinstalling the driver worked for me. I'm not sure of the exact cause for this but it has only happened twice is 2 years, so it's not a deal breaker.

Also, another "con" I've noticed is that this printer does *not* always print perfectly straight...meaning the text sometimes prints at a slight angle with the side of the paper. This is because the mechanism that grabs the paper grabs it off-center. Really it's only noticeable when I'm printing 9 PDF pages per sheet side.

Overall, I think this printer could break today and I'd still say it was worth the 70 bucks + 30 for the generic replacement toner.

I got mine used, 3 years ago, without benefit of knowing how many "miles" it had on it. I downloaded the drivers (less than 1mb- not 20 or 30mb, like some) and they loaded up without a hitch in Win98SE. It has never jammed, despite using various paper weights and qualities, and prints a page in about 6 seconds, with superior clarity. I've used it with 4 or 5 different PC's.
When it ran low on toner, about 6 months ago, I was happy to find out that the cartridge was very easily refillable - it already has a plug you just pop out, to add the toner. I got the toner from TonerRefillKits.com for 30 bucks, with excellent instructions, and good for 2 refills. Refilling it restored the print quality to "just like new".
This was my first laser printer, and after using several brands and models of inkjets, all of which invariably had problems with cartridges drying out or leaking, I'm happy to say that the P8 has never failed to print perfectly, either during continuous use, or after sitting idle for several months.
Right now I'm considering getting another one for my second PC, as I'm VERY unhappy with the brand new Lexmark Z23 hooked up to it. I'll NEVER buy another Lexmark product.

The rated printing speed is eight pages per minute, and we printed eight identical copies in 71 seconds.
We also printed a color photo using the default printer settings (600 dpi, medium halftoning); the printer's 256-grayscale interpretation of the original's colors was warm and smooth with little evidence of dotted halftoning or pixelation. The total printing time for the photo was 35 seconds (20 seconds to transfer the data and process the image, 15 seconds to print it) from the time we clicked the Print button to the time we pulled the paper from the output tray. A second printing of the same image took only 21 seconds.
We also manually changed the printer settings to 300 dpi with medium halftoning and again to 600 dpi with fine halftoning. The former was a bit grainy, and the latter was too dark. Clearly there's no need to override the printer's decisions for most printing tasks.
Overall, we think the P8's performance was very good for its price--this is a nice, little laser printer for general-purpose printing.

For SOHO (small office/home office) users looking for an inexpensive, small, quality black and white laser printer, the E120N is probably the best on the market. This unit is provides high quality, fast output, Ethernet networking, efficient use of toner and a small, well designed profile that allows it to fit well even in tight spaces of small offices. It is a great choice for Mac users, too, as opposed to some of the other low-end laser printers that may exclude Mac support. I have no complaint about the OS X CUPS driver it uses, and it seems that the E120N's OS X driver is actually a bit smarter than its Windows driver given that on the Mac it can automatically choose to use the top tray when paper is available (whereas in Windows the tray has to be selected manually). Speaking of the top tray, it's very conveniently used to print envelopes (Official 10 particularly).

In the nine months we've owned ours, we're on our second full toner cart, and while the printer's toner nag light has been on for weeks now the output is still problem free. Another note about the cartridges is that they're often not sold at the big office chains. The best way to get them is to order online the toner cartridge recycling package, which offers a lower price as long as the user promises to ship back empty carts. I do have some concerns about how long the E120N will last since one of the trays stopped picking up paper properly for a short amount of time. That problem went away. As long as I can get at least two years out of it, I'll be satisfied enough to maintain my 5 star rating. The E120N is certainly a better choice than using an inkjet for B&W printing, spending a fortune on inkjet ink in the process. Regarding noise level, this is a nearly silent laser printer, but there is one interesting quirk: for some reason it periodically, perhaps hourly, goes through some 2 second mechanical adjustment that is moderately loud. If that bothers you (it can be a bit of a nuisance in a quiet room), you can always turn it off when it's not in use.
